Sewage on ships is managed by the MARPOL annex dedicated to sewage. This annex sets the rules for treatment, retention, and discharge of ship-generated sewage and requires port reception facilities to handle it. MARPOL includes several annexes, each targeting a different pollutant: oil, noxious liquids in bulk, harmful substances in packaged form, garbage, and air pollution. Since sewage is addressed by its own dedicated annex, that is the correct one. The other annexes cover oil pollution, noxious liquids, packaged harmful substances, and air pollution, not sewage.
