In emergencies, the command structure on board remains in effect and the Master directs the response. Your role as an Environmental Officer doesn’t automatically override your designated duties; you act within that role to support and implement the Master’s orders. The best choice reflects that you follow the Master’s guidance and use your EO training to assist the response, coordinating with others as needed. If a situation ever made a direct conflict with safety, you’d address life-saving needs and then communicate with the Master, but you wouldn’t treat your EO role as sovereign over the Master’s command.
